Planning a wholesale store on Shopify? You may not need Shopify Plus. The right setup depends on who buys from you, whether trade customers get individual prices, and how closely your wholesale operation overlaps with retail.

For a UK distributor, the most useful first question is simple: does wholesale need its own store, or can trade customers buy through the existing one? Answer that before commissioning design work.

The short answer: Choose a blended store when retail and trade share products, inventory and operational teams. Consider a dedicated B2B store when wholesale needs its own catalogue experience, staff, integrations or access restrictions. Choose a Shopify plan only after listing the features your buyers actually require.

Blended or dedicated: which works for your business?

A blended store serves consumers and approved trade buyers through one Shopify store. Customers sign in to access the wholesale buying experience. Your team manages the two audiences in a shared Shopify admin, including shared inventory.

A dedicated store is a separate Shopify store for B2B customers. This provides a distinct environment for wholesale operations, but also means separate setup, store administration and potentially additional integration work.

Business requirement Usually explore first
Retail and trade share most products and stock Blended
Wholesale has separate teams or warehouse processes Dedicated
Trade buyers need distinct prices after login Either, subject to plan and catalogue rules
Your trade site must be restricted to approved businesses Dedicated may be simpler to operate

Shopify explicitly warns that moving from one store model to the other later may require substantial reconfiguration. See its official comparison of blended and dedicated stores.

Do you need Shopify Plus for B2B?

Not necessarily. Shopify's published feature comparison lists B2B functionality on Basic, Grow, Advanced and Plus. Companies, company locations, quantity rules, volume pricing and net payment terms are available across these plans, subject to configuration.

The significant differences are the more advanced buying and pricing requirements:

  • Catalogues: Basic, Grow and Advanced can assign up to three active catalogues across B2B markets; Plus supports unlimited B2B market catalogues.
  • Negotiated account-specific pricing: Direct catalogue assignments to particular companies or company locations are a Plus capability.
  • Different storefront or checkout experiences by market: Shopify lists these contextual customisations for Advanced and Plus.
  • Advanced payments: Deposit requirements and partial payments are listed as Plus features.

On Basic, Grow and Advanced, the newer Shopify Markets configuration is required for B2B catalogue features. Entitlements change, so check the current Shopify B2B plan matrix before making a purchase decision.

Buying tip: If everyone in your wholesale programme gets one shared trade price list, a simpler plan may work. If every major account negotiates a different product catalogue or price list, investigate Plus early rather than discovering that constraint halfway through a build.

Example: a distributor selling to shops and consumers

Imagine a UK homewares distributor with an existing consumer storefront. It wants to add 40 trade buyers who order cartons of the same products at agreed wholesale prices. The warehouse, stock and customer support teams are shared.

In this hypothetical example, a blended store is the sensible starting point: trade buyers sign in to access their prices, while consumers use the ordinary storefront. The team must still confirm quantity rules, VAT handling, payment methods and whether the chosen plan can deliver the required trade price structure.

Now change one detail. Each of the 40 accounts has its own negotiated catalogue. That is no longer the same project: the business must assess direct company-location catalogue assignment and whether Plus is justified. A separate B2B storefront might help with operational separation, but it does not by itself remove all Shopify plan constraints.

The lesson is not “always choose blended” or “always choose Plus”. It is design around the actual buying process.

Five things to demonstrate before launch

  1. Correct account: An approved buyer logs in under the right company and location.
  2. Correct price: That buyer sees the expected products, minimum quantities and trade prices.
  3. Correct checkout: Shipping, payment terms, taxes and order approval follow the agreed rules.
  4. Correct privacy: A buyer cannot access another company's records or order history.
  5. Usable ordering: Your buyer can place and repeat an order on mobile without staff assistance.

Use test accounts and representative orders to check those journeys before inviting real trade customers. Shopify offers a B2B getting-started checklist and testing guidance. These checks describe a proposed QA process, not a claim that every capability works automatically without configuration or custom development.

What should your Shopify agency quote include?

Ask for more than a theme mock-up. A sound proposal explains how companies and locations will be set up, how wholesale prices are assigned, whether an ERP or accounting system is involved, how existing customers are migrated, and who owns testing and support.

Request a simple worked example of a real buying journey: an approved trade customer logs in, finds their negotiated price, orders the required pack quantity and receives the correct invoice. If the agency cannot show how that would work, it is too early to agree a full build.
